Private tour, for six people, of Westminster Abbey
Description
A steward of the Abbey will provide a special 75-minute tour of this fantastic building. It is the perfect setting for entertaining visiting guests, but no less spectacular for locals wishing to sneak a peek behind the scenes. The tour ends in Poets Corner, near the graves of Charles Dickens and George Frideric Handel, before finishing back in the Cloisters. On completion of the guided tour, guests will also be able to explore the Cloisters and, possibly, the gardens.
Westminster Abbey is one the world’s most important and fascinating historic buildings. Since the Middle Ages, the Abbey has been the location for Britain’s most momentous events, including the Queen’s coronation in 1952. More than 16 royal weddings have taken place at the Abbey since 1100, most recently that of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
The Abbey is the final resting place of many famous people, including Charles Darwin, Geoffrey Chaucer, Isaac Newton, William Shakespeare and Stephen Hawking, whose memorials can be seen here. The magnificent architecture includes the priceless Cosmati Pavement, the David Hockney window and, of course, the sacred heart of the Abbey, St Edward the Confessor’s Shrine.
The newest, and perhaps most stunning, additions are the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee galleries, high above the Abbey with breathtaking views of the nave.
