Description

“I particularly like nasturtiums - they are so cheerful. Their orange, red and yellow flowers contrast with the green of their leaves, and the shapes they make are very satisfying. So easy to grow, they sum up the English Cottage Garden perfectly."

About the artist

Born in America in 1946, Jill was brought up in Essex. She attended Colchester School of Art under John Nash and Edward Bawden and went on to study Graphic Design at the Central School of Art & Design (now Central Saint Martins). This was followed by working in publishing both ‘in house’ and freelance for a number of years before returning to painting in 1996. Jill is inspired by domestic subjects mainly flowers within a still life, although she also enjoys painting cats, buildings and sometimes people! Preferring to paint in watercolour and/or acrylic, Jill has discovered her own gentle style which explores and promotes the exquisite colours and patterns found in nature and man made objects - especially those she treasures. She employs delightful vibrant colours with an instant appeal and a talent for making each picture personal and cherished.

Jill was elected a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 2009 and The Royal Society of British Artists in 2011. She has featured in exhibitions around the UK including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Competition, The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition and The Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Since 2017 Jill has found the time and energy to be the first female President of the Royal Watercolour Society (founded 1804). Jill is married to artist Martin Leman - they live and work (in separate studios!) from their home in Islington, tucked away down a cobbled lane overlooking a small park.
