Why your support is so important

Every day, seven young people aged 13-24 hear the words "you have cancer".
Cancer can throw their lives into chaos. Even for those who recover, it can have a lasting impact on their futures.

Without Teenage Cancer Trust, they might not get the clear communication, sense of control and individual support they need throughout a potentially life-threatening illness. And they might never meet another person their age who knows what they're going through. Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to providing this specialised nursing care and support.

Together, we can reach every young person facing cancer.

Our units:

Teenage Cancer Trust has a unit in almost every major NHS cancer treatment hospital in the UK. Most include a whole ward for young people, a big social area and facilities for friends and family. Every unit has a dedicated team of specialist nurses and youth support workers

For many young people, staying on one of our units might be the first night they’ve ever spent in hospital. That sets the tone for their cancer treatment, at a scary and confusing time – first impressions matter.

So on our units, you’ll get the very best care and support from friendly staff who specialise in working with young people. Family and friends are welcomed and supported too, and everything from the furniture, lighting and colours to the TV, kitchen and chillout areas is designed to help you relax and feel at home.

Our units are places where young people can be themselves, have the comforts of home while going through treatment, and meet others their age facing cancer so they feel less alone. It’s hospital that doesn’t feel like hospital.

Our nurses:

Every young person is different. Our nurses understand that, and provide expert, tailored support for you and your family from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond.

Where other nurses might specialise in a particular cancer type, Teenage Cancer Trust Nurses are the experts in caring for young people with cancer.

They’re specially trained in how cancer affects teenagers and young adults, and understand how to support you with the impact on things like your emotions, friendships, studies, work and relationships – as well as providing world-class medical care.

Our nurses are specialists in young people, so they have the extra time to get to know you as a person, not a patient, and can tailor their care and support specially for you and your family.

When you’re facing a new and confusing world of hospital appointments, scans and check-ups, your Teenage Cancer Trust Nurse is by your side to explain unfamiliar medical terms, help you navigate treatment, and feel more in control.

They’re a consistent, reassuring, go-to person for any questions or worries you or your family might have, from the point you’re diagnosed, throughout treatment, and afterwards as you adjust to life beyond cancer.

Our Youth Support Coordinators:

Cancer doesn’t just affect you physically – it can have a huge impact on every other part of your life too. Your Youth Support Coordinator is there to help you deal with that impact, and connect with others your age so you don’t feel alone.

Youth Support Coordinators work alongside our nursing teams to help young people deal with the emotional and practical impact of cancer. Their role is non-medical, so they’re 100% focused on young people as individuals, not just a diagnosis.

They’re also skilled at bringing young people with cancer together to support each other. They make sure our units are a relaxed and welcoming place where young people can bond over TV, games or pizza.

And they run group activities and discussions – online or in person when possible – that encourage young people to open up, share their experiences of cancer with each other, and realise they’re not alone.

By supporting The Connor Brothers prize draw you are helping us to continue funding all of these world class services around the United Kingdom.

Thank You!
